Your first step to a complete smile is your implant placement surgery. Here’s how to best prepare for dental implant surgery.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask Questions

It is normal to have several questions about the road ahead. Do not hesitate to ask your dentist any questions or discuss your concerns. They’ll take time to ensure you have the information you need to feel confident in the decision you’re making for your wellness.

Plan Ahead for Your Recovery

You can expect your mouth to be sore for a few days after your placement surgery. Ensure you have any prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications at home, so you don’t have to worry about running to the pharmacy. Your dentist will give you strict dietary instructions, like consuming liquids for the first couple of weeks. Choose a variety of liquids to keep you nourished while you’re recovering. You’ll need to take it easy for a couple of days, so prepare relaxing activities to keep you occupied while you recover, like reading or catching up on your favorite Netflix show.

Arrange Transportation

Sedation or anesthesia will be used to keep you comfortable as your implant dentist inserts your posts into your jawbone. It can take a few hours for the effects to wear off, so you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. It is best to have someone stay with you until the effects of any medications dissipate.

Take Time Off Work

You will need to take a day or two off work to recover. Most people can return to work in about 24 to 48 hours. However, if you have a physically strenuous job, your dentist may place restrictions to prevent healing complications.

Your gums will be healed in a couple of weeks, but it will take several months for your jaw to integrate with your posts. It is time well spent to benefit from a tooth loss solution that can last for decades.
