Assessing Periodontal Risk Vista
Are You at Risk for Gum Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease isn’t just a pervasive oral health problem; it’s also one of the most common health problems in general. When left untreated, it can have a dramatic effect on your smile and even leave you more vulnerable to chronic health problems that influence overall wellbeing.
When periodontal disease goes undiagnosed and untreated for a long period of time, it can ultimately destroy your gums and the bone surrounding and supporting your teeth. It’s also characterized by inflammation, irritation, bleeding, and bad breath. What’s more, advanced periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults.
The checklist below will help you determine your risk for developing gum disease.
High Risk Factors:
- A systemic health condition like diabetes
- Swollen or irritated gums
- Bleeding that occurs when you brush or floss
- Heart disease
- Tobacco use
- Loose teeth
- Pregnancy or menopause
- Orthodontic treatment
Medium-Level Risk Factors:
- An unhealthy diet
- Being 40 or older
- A family history of periodontal disease
- Missing teeth
- Certain antidepressants, contraceptives, or heart medications
- Teeth grinding or jaw clenching
- Stress
- Putting off routine cleanings or checkups
- Forgetting to brush and floss for days at a time
For each familiar risk factor listed above, you have an increased risk for developing a serious problem with periodontal disease. Beyond poor hygiene practices and lack of dental visits, other factors that can increase your risk include a genetic predisposition to periodontal disease and hormonal fluctuations. Talk to your dentist or contact Dr. Farhoumand if you have questions about periodontal disease or if you would like to schedule a periodontal exam.
