Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar along the gumline. Over time, as more plaque and tartar accumulate, pockets can develop between the teeth and gums. Once this happens, the ingredients of periodontal disease have greater access to the most vulnerable parts of your mouth. If treatment isn’t administered promptly, gum tissue loss and bone loss can occur.

Thankfully, help is possible with a pair of services from your Vista periodontist known as scaling and root planing. This pair of procedures provides patients just like you with hope in the face of a destructive and pervasive disease—a disease that can just as easily affect your overall health in addition to your oral health.

How Scaling & Root Planing Works

Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that typically takes place over the course of one to two appointments with Dr. Bita Farhoumand, our experienced periodontist. First, all plaque and tartar will be removed from the surface of the teeth, as far down as the pockets of the gums. This will help minimize the accumulation of bacteria within the mouth that could lead to worsening gum disease symptoms.

Next is root planing, which involves Dr. Farhoumand removing deposits of bacteria below the gumline, on the roots. This will hopefully allow your gum tissue to healthily reattach to the teeth, protecting the roots and supportive bone structure below from deterioration. This method of gum disease treatment is minimally invasive, but it does require a recovery period.
