What Is Gum Disease & How Is It Treated?
In its mild to moderate stages, gum disease is treated in-office with a procedure known as a deep cleaning. Sometimes, this method alone is not enough to fully heal your gums from periodontal disease. When additional treatment is needed to get your gums back to their normal health, your periodontist uses Perio Protect! It’s a system that administers medication directly to the infected pockets of the gums to fight disease.
How Does Perio Protect Work?
Perio Protect uses custom-fit trays that hold medication directly against the base of the gum long enough to fight bacteria that cause gum disease. The medication used in Perio Protect may differ depending on the level of your infection, but most medications use a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide to control the development of bacteria in the pockets below the gum line. Perio Protect is a gentle, effective way to restore your gums back to their original health.
How to Prevent Gum Disease
Of course, the best-case scenario would be if gum disease never developed in the first place. After you’ve undergone treatment with a deep cleaning and at-home Perio Protect, you can make sure periodontal disease doesn’t occur again by maintaining excellent dental hygiene. To improve your hygiene routine, keep the following in mind.
- Brush your teeth for two minutes, at least twice a day or after each meal
- Try setting a timer until you’re sure you’re hitting the two-minute mark every time
- Floss daily to remove bacteria and food particles your toothbrush leaves behind
- Swish with mouthwash to help kill bacteria in harder-to-reach areas of the mouth
- Visit your dentist every six months, or more often if recommended
Additionally, people who use tobacco should be aware of the increased risk for oral problems related to tobacco use. Smoking and other forms of the substance are the leading cause of gum disease and oral cancer. For better oral and overall health, kick the habit as soon as you can.
